Moldova's ruling pro-EU party has won the parliamentary elections with over 50% of the vote, according to official results published today. With over 99.5% of the ballots counted, the Action and Solidarity Party led by President Maia Sandu got 50.03% of the vote, compared to 24.26% for the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc.
According to the latest projections, with these numbers Pas would get 55 seats out of the 101 in parliament, while the oppositions 48, with the Patriotic Bloc at 27 seats and Alternativa 9 seats. Our party (Partidul Nostru) will have six seats in parliament, as will the Democratia Acasa party.
President Sandu: 'We were not intimidated'
.From the election result comes 'a strong mandate for the accession process' to the European Union. This was said by the President of Moldova and leader of the pro-EU party (the Pas), Maia Sandu, at a press conference organised in Chisinau. "We have shown the whole world that we are brave and dignified, that we have not allowed ourselves to be intimidated," Sandu added in reference to Russian interference. In the late morning, the president also received a congratulatory phone call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Moldovan parliament has 101 seats and its members remain in office for four years. The turnout reached 52.16%, far exceeding the required threshold (one third of those eligible to vote), and therefore the elections were declared valid.
While the ballot was in progress, former president Igor Dodon, leader of the pro-Russians, tried to stir up the square: 'Pas has lost these elections and does not currently have a parliamentary majority, while the opposition - which overall got 49.54% of the vote - has won,' he declared. Analysis overturned when the ballot was over.
