La Russa (ACI): ‘Monza: a record-breaking Grand Prix – we’re a model for the world’
Geronimo La Russa, president of the ACI: “We’ve broken the records for attendance and takings, with over 40 million. New works to improve the circuit will begin on 14 September.”
Kimi Antonelli’s extraordinary comeback at the Temple of Speed last Sunday epitomised the essence of the new Formula 1. The apotheosis of cinematic and sporting epic in the purest ‘Drive to Survive’ style – the Netflix series to which much of the Circus’s resurgence among North American audiences and younger generations of fans is owed. But alongside the success of the Italian driver at Mercedes, the World Championship round at the Autodromo di Monza cemented the Italian Grand Prix’s pivotal role in the calendar and its importance as a showcase for Italia and its ‘brands’. It was an unforgettable debut for the new president of the Automobile Club d’Italia, Geronimo La Russa.
‘It’s hard to imagine a debut more full of excitement and satisfaction. A race that will go down in history. An Italian driver winning 60 years after Ludovico Scarfiotti’s last victory, whom we had mentioned at the event’s press conference. Our fans, the motorsport fans, who cheered on Kimi, an immensely talented young Italian who is being celebrated today by the international press. And then there was Laura Pausini’s concert, broadcast worldwide, and the national anthem sung by tenor Francesco Meli of La Scala, accompanied by the breathtaking flypast of the Frecce Tricolori. A showcase for Italia and Italian craftsmanship of immense value.”
You have been involved with the Monza Grand Prix for many years, having served as president of the Automobile Club Milano from 2018 until February 2026. You also faced the risk of it being removed from the calendar, prior to the new agreement with Liberty running until 2031. How did you manage to preserve its century-old history?
It was a long and complex undertaking, but one in which all the political and sporting institutions shared a common vision. A joint effort in which Italia was able to give its very best.
A work in progress.
