Scant presence, today, of national representatives of institutions, at the ceremony for the seventh anniversary of the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa, which occurred on 14 August 2018 at 11.36. A disaster that claimed the lives of 43 people. For the first time, the central part of the commemoration will take place in the area adjacent to the 14.08.2018 Memorial (inaugurated on 15 December). But the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, with the delegation of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, will only be there to represent the State (unless there are any last-minute surprises).
On Tuesday, moreover, the green light was given to the dpcm (decree of the Prime Minister) implementing the regulation to support the victims of the Polcevera viaduct collapse. If, in fact, Law 63 of 15 April 2025 established an instrument that recognises, at last, the rights of the victims of such tragedies, the dpcm will translate this principle into concrete aid: economic support for relatives, aid for those in difficulty and close to retirement, scholarships to accompany orphans in their school and university career, work opportunities for those who have lost their jobs, and simplified procedures for the recognition of citizenship for those who have been living legally in Italy for years.
The measure, initialled by Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini and Economy and Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, 'is in addition to and disregards,' reads a MIT note, 'the compensation to be established by the judiciary', and is still only awaiting the final signature of the undersecretary to the Prime Minister, Alfredo Mantovano - expected, they assure the ministry, in a very short time - to become fully operational law.
In the next few weeks, the disbursement procedures, managed by the body already in charge of compensating road victims (Road Victims Fund), will be operational. The regulation, of course, does not only concern the Morandi but also those who will be involved in any future events involving road and motorway infrastructures of national importance.
As far as commemorations are concerned, today, 14 August at 9 a.m., in the parish church of San Bartolomeo della Certosa, a mass will be celebrated by the archbishop of Genoa, Monsignor Marco Tasca. The mayor of Genoa, Silvia Salis, will be present.
