The board of directors of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena is making a sharp turn in the governance game and paving the way for a profound managerial reorganisation, albeit under the banner of continuity in the presidency. At the end of weeks of intense debate, the outgoing board has in fact launched the list of candidates destined to make up the board for the next three years.
The list - which will be submitted to the shareholders' meeting on 15 April - does not include, as has emerged in recent hours, the name of CEO Luigi Lovaglio, a key player in the bank's relaunch but at the centre, in recent weeks, of a harsh internal confrontation within the board. Confirmed instead, as expected, is the candidacy for the chairmanship of the current number one Nicola Maione, a figure of guarantee and historical presence on the board of Siena, who in recent weeks has managed the dialogue with the major shareholders and the European Central Bank in the delicate phase of defining the new governance.
There are three profiles on the list as possible candidates to lead the next phase of Monte. In pole position is Fabrizio Palermo, CEO of Acea, whose term of office expires next spring, and former number one at Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. Alongside him is a figure of great standing such as the banker and former minister Corrado Passera, founder of Unlimited Bank - later acquired by Banca Ifis - and already at the head of groups such as Intesa Sanpaolo and Poste Italiane. Completing the trio of possible candidates for the role of CEO is Carlo Vivaldi, a long-standing manager with extensive international experience gained at UniCredit.
In detail, the list reportedly includes these names:
Nicola Maione (Chairman); Fabrizio Palermo (CEO candidate); Corrado Passera (CEO candidate), Carlo Vivaldi (CEO candidate), Paolo Boccardelli, Gianluca Brancadoro, Alessandro Caltagirone, Antonella Centra, Rosa Cipriotti, Elena De Simone, Simonetta Iarlori, Domenico Lombardi, Paola Lucantoni, Fabiana Massa, Gianmarco Montanari, Francesca Pace, Marcella Panucci, Francesca Paramico Renzulli, Renato Sala, Paolo Testi.
It will now be up to the assembly on 15 April to vote on the individual names on the list and thus define the final composition of the new board.
