Four ideas for the weekend
A month of music in Tropea
Jazz, blues, bossa nova and fusions of various genres will bring the streets and squares of Tropea to life for a whole month, as the town ushers in autumn with a fresh and sophisticated rhythm. From 2 October, Tropea will be transformed into an open-air stage for the first edition of ‘Blue Jazz Tropea’, a music festival dedicated to African-American music, swing, blues and Latin sounds. This event will entertain locals, visitors and tourists every Friday and Saturday evening until 31 October, bringing twenty musical groups to two of the most picturesque spots in the historic centre: Piazza Ercole and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The ‘Blue Jazz Tropea’ programme promises to be rich and varied, ranging from the elegance of jazz improvisation to the warm fusion of funk and Latin rhythms. Autumn is the ideal time to enjoy some more lovely days by the sea. Not to be missed from 9 October is the wonderful ‘Azzurra Primavera’ exhibition, a project dedicated to contemporary art, in the cloister of Villa Paola – Tropea’s only five-star boutique hotel – organised in collaboration with the Cesare Berlingeri ETS Foundation in Taurianova, which promotes art and culture through the preservation, enhancement and dissemination of artistic and historical heritage, beginning with the work of its founder. Villa Paola is a magical place that combines the charm of a historic residence, set amongst elegant terraces and Mediterranean gardens, with an exquisite and impressive culinary experience. The hotel is the result of the evolution, over the centuries, of a former 16th-century monastery, once inhabited by the Minimi friars of the order founded by Saint Francis of Paola.
