Elon Musk breaks ranks and announces the take-off of his new centre-right party in protest against Donald Trump's maxi-budget. A party that already has a name, America Party, and a close and precise goal: to snatch between eight and ten seats in the House and two or three seats in the Senate in the mid-term elections in November 2026.
This patrol, in the eyes of the billionaire former major ally and backer of the President, may become the needle of the political future of the United States under the banner of fiscal rigour. "America Party is born to restore your freedom", he declared.
Musk explained that one of the strategies being considered is to "focus like a laser on two or three seats in the Senate and 8 or 10 constituencies in the House. Given the slim majority margins, these would be sufficient to serve as decisive votes on controversial legislation, to ensure that they truly respect the will of the people'.
Trump's budget, which inflates the debt by 3.3 trillion due to massive tax cuts and security spending despite drastic welfare cuts, was passed by a 218 to 2.14 vote in the House and with only one vote in the Senate, that of Vice President JD Vance needed to break a 50-50 deadlock. Musk accused the plan of driving 'the country into bankruptcy'.
It is unclear whether Musk has already filed initial paperwork with election authorities on his new organisation, or if and when he intends to do so. Nor is it clear that Musk will actually succeed in threatening America's ironclad two-party system, which has withstood repeated challenges over the years. Complicating the emergence of third forces is a costly tangle of laws and rules at the state as well as federal level that are essential to qualify and remain qualified for the ballot box and can generate endless legal battles.
