Is the honeymoon between Elon Musk and Donald Trump already over? It is probably too early to say. But after the President blurted out to his aides that Mr Tesla will soon leave his political engagement, the imposition of duties seems to have thrown salt in the wound.

Let us start with a fact. Since Donald Trump announced his global tariffs on 2 April, the assets of Elon Musk have plummeted by some $28 billion. A collapse that parallels the overall annual collapse. Since Trump has been in the White House, in fact, Musk's wealth has fallen by more than 130 billion, burning off post-election euphoria and more.

And since Musk is ultimately an entrepreneur, this time it seems that Mr Tesla has decided to distance himself from his chairman.

He did so during the League congress, where he appeared by video link and explained that he hoped for a future without tariffs between Europe and the United States. A stance that Trump did not like very much.

But above all, Musk's distancing himself from Trump's tariffs was manifested in a post on X, where Mr Tesla posted a very peculiar video.

It is one of the most iconic videos by Milton Friedman, in which he takes up economist Leonard Read's classic idea from his essay "I, Pencil".

In the video, Friedman shows a simple pencil and explains how no single person really knows how to make it from scratch.

Musk al congresso della Lega: "Spero zero dazi in futuro, alleanza Usa-Ue sia più forte"

The wood perhaps comes from a tree in Oregon, the graphite from a mine in South America, the toe rubber from Malaysia, the metal from China... yet it all works thanks to the free market, without a central plan.

It is a perfect example to explain the concept of spontaneous cooperation and the importance of economic freedom. And Friedman uses it to say: look what the market can do, without anyone giving orders.

A very subtle message to Donald Trump, then. And the feeling is that between the two, the honeymoon is already over.
