Mutti: farmers are paid 10 per cent more for tomatoes than the market
In the last campaign, 728,000 tonnes of product were processed, the highest volume ever achieved in the company's history
In 2025 Mutti recognised a price for tomatoes 10% higher than the market average for its suppliers, for a total of more than 9 million euro distributed throughout the supply chain, which is made up of around 800 Italian farmers. During the last tomato campaign, the Parma-based company processed 728,000 tonnes of tomatoes, the highest volume ever achieved in the company's history, the result of a 10% increase in the number of hectares dedicated to tomatoes in Northern Italy. The volumes recorded during the summer enabled the group to rebalance the particularly complex situation generated by the 2024 campaign, which ended with a shortfall of 20% in terms of quantity, which had led to an almost total stock shortage close to the start of the new season.
A complex climatic context
"Despite a complex climatic context," explains Massimo Perboni, director of Mutti's agricultural service, "with high night temperatures at the end of June that put many hectares under stress and negatively affected yields in August, the late part of the campaign was able to compensate for the initial difficulties. Decisive for the success of the 2025 campaign was the role of the Mutti chain, made up of more than 800 farmers: "For this reason we have allocated 9 million euros in incentives and recognised contributions of up to 20% more for early and late products," explains Francesco Mutti, managing director of the family firm of the same name. "The tomato is a crop that requires daily attention and a profound knowledge of the land, all the more so in an increasingly unpredictable climatic context. In addition to a price surplus, Mutti has also for years been running an incentive programme called Premio Pomodorino d'Oro, now in its 26th edition. The prize has four categories - round tomato, a historic award present since the first edition, datterino, lungo and ciliegino - and decrees who has been able to give Mutti the best quality throughout the entire season, from mid-July to the end of September". The 2025 edition therefore rewarded 68 farmers in the chain, with an additional economic bonus on all volumes delivered to Mutti. The group's latest turnover, that for 2024, ended 703 million euro, with export volumes exceeding Italian sales volumes.
