NBC poll: 55 per cent of Americans believe Trump has damaged the economy

The fall in support for Donald Trump threatens to drag the Republicans down in November’s mid-term elections, as voters hold him responsible for rising prices and economic instability: this is according to a new poll by NBC News.
The US president’s approval rating stands at 41 per cent amongst registered voters – the lowest level ever recorded in the poll – with a majority (55 per cent) of voters believing that Trump’s policies have damaged the economy.
This figure is up from the 48 per cent recorded in March, before the war in Iran caused petrol prices and the cost of other goods to soar, cementing the rising cost of living as the most pressing issue for voters.
The Democrats hold a 5-point lead in the battle for control of Congress (50 per cent to 45 per cent): a margin well below the 12-point lead the party enjoyed at the same stage ahead of the 2018 elections, when the Democrats capitalised on the anti-Trump wave to win a majority in the House of Representatives during the first mid-term elections of his presidency.
Despite this advantage, the party continues to be viewed more negatively than Trump and the GOP.
