New Land Rover Defender Dakar: the queen of the desert hits the road with 626 cavalli
Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, the car delivers 626 CV, featuring rally-derived technology and road-legal certification
Winning the stock category of the Dakar Rally at the first attempt is a feat that leaves its mark. To celebrate this historic triumph, Land Rover has decided to translate that extreme experience into a production model, unveiling the new Defender Dakar in California during Monterey Car Week. This road-legal version of the D7X-R prototype raises the bar for off-road performance, going well beyond the already high standards of the current range.
Under the bonnet beats the same powerful heart as the Defender Octa. The engine is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 capable of delivering a staggering 626 cavalli and 750 Nm of torque, channelled to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with low-range gears. This technical specification, combined with the legacy of the thirteen stages and 15,000 kilometres tackled in the desert, delivers an unstoppable character and exceptional responsiveness.
Its imposing appearance is emphasised by enormous 35-inch all-terrain tyres fitted to 20-inch forged alloy wheels. The suspension features Bilstein shock absorbers developed for motorsport, complemented by specific driving modes for dunes and off-road terrain. One of the most ingenious features is the so-called ‘Flight Mode’, a system that temporarily disengages the transfer case clutch during jumps to cushion the impact on landing and protect the drivetrain.
Visually, the vehicle stands out for its riveted wheel arches, air intakes and carbon-fibre bonnet, as well as reinforced underbody protection against rocks. Inside the cabin, the ambience is clearly inspired by the world of off-road racing without compromising on the quality of the materials. The layout features front bucket seats, optional four-point harnesses and a rear compartment specifically designed to accommodate racing helmets.
The Defender Dakar’s colour range pays homage to the world of motorsport. The configuration that most closely mirrors the desert-winning model combines the distinctive Dakar Sand livery with a roof finished in Yanbu Turquoise. Rounding off the range are matt protective films, available as an option in Narvik Black and Alaska White to protect the bodywork during the most extreme adventures.
