Nicaragua cuts diplomatic ties with Italia following Tajani’s accusations

“In light of the unjustified, aggressive and irresponsible statements made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic, Antonio Tajani, who, in violation of every norm of respect governing relations between peoples and governments, has insulted us with European arrogance, the people and government of Nicaragua – as a tangible expression of our sovereignty and national dignity – we hereby inform the Italian Government, and in particular Minister Antonio Tajani, of our intention to sever all diplomatic relations with the Italian Government”.

This is reported by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on El 19 Digital, the official news outlet and digital newspaper of Managua.

“We have experienced very positive periods, characterised by the utmost respect and understanding of our processes on the part of influential Italian authorities, whom we have had the privilege and honour of meeting, and with whom we have collaborated and tackled the historical circumstances of the world in which we lived in years gone by. Today, faced with this disgraceful situation, we deeply regret that acts of aggression such as those described are taking place, in stark contrast to the historic bond between Italia and ourselves, and with our other sister nations, and we hope that the better days – which humanity so desperately needs and demands – will soon arrive. We hereby give notice and shall ensure the implementation of the necessary procedures to uphold this sovereign and dignified decision by Nicaragua.”

The Nicaraguan government has therefore announced its intention to sever diplomatic relations with Italy: this is in response to remarks made by the Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, who on Wednesday 15 July at the EPP summit in Madrid had stated that Italia “shares nothing with the vision of extremist governments such as that of Nicaragua, a country that still affords protection to dangerous terrorists from the Red Brigades, such as Alessio Casimirri”.

But yesterday, the Deputy Prime Minister returned to the matter to reiterate that Italia is calling on “Nicaragua to extradite Alessio Casimirri to our country; he is Aldo Moro’s murderer, sentenced to six life sentences. To continue to grant immunity to a criminal strikes me as truly unjust and unacceptable. We criticise this decision and the Nicaraguan regime because it continues to provide cover, and even citizenship, to a murderer.
