Night trains: 50% boom in travellers, most popular routes and costs

Travelling by train at night is liked. "We believe in the night, the numbers are telling us that demand is increasing by around 50% per year on some major routes," said Trenitalia CEO Luigi Corradi, speaking on the sidelines of the presentation of the NightJet Rome Vienna. Influencing the increase in customer demand is certainly the price factor, which is much lower than for a 'daily' ticket. But not only that.
The numbers
.In 2023, 1.9 million passengers travelled on Intercity Notte (+23% compared to 2022). In 2024 the night service recorded an increase in passengers in the first half of around 7%. Trenitalia estimates to close 2024 with more than 2 million trips. By 2026, the company goes on to explain, 70 latest-generation night carriages will be purchased with Pnrr funds for a total investment of 140 million euros.

In particular, four daily trains to and from Turin, Salerno; two daily trains to and from Turin, Reggio Calabria; two daily trains to and from Turin, Lecce; four daily trains to and from Milan, Lecce; two daily trains to and from Milan, Messina, Siracusa/Palermo; four daily trains to and from Rome, Messina, Syracuse/Palermo; two daily trains to and from Rome, Venice, Trieste; two weekend trains to and from Rome, Bolzano-S. Candido; two weekend trains to and from Rome, Lecce.
The most popular routes
.The routes with the highest turnout in 2024 are: Lecce-Milan; Rome-Venice; Bari-Milan; Lecce-Turin; Milan-Taranto; Bologna-Lecce; Genoa-Naples; Palermo-Rome; Foggia-Milan and Catania-Rome. Good results, explain Ferrovie dello Stato, also for the periodic Rome-Bolzano trains extended to San Candido both in winter and summer.
