Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Kitagawa, Robson and Yaghi for metal-organic structures
Swedish Academy rewards research leading to new materials
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 was awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi for pioneering the chemistry that led to new materials. "The winners developed a new type of molecular architecture. The structures they created - metal-organic structures - contain large cavities in which molecules can flow in and out. The researchers used them to collect water from desert air, extract pollutants from water, capture carbon dioxide and store hydrogen," the statement reads.
'Metal-organic structures have enormous potential, offering unexpected opportunities for customised materials with new functions,' said Heiner Linke, chairman of the Nobel Committee on Chemistry.
