Nordio: 'The sentence on the paramilitary Csm the biggest regret. Meloni confirmed my trust"

The 'biggest regret' was not the defeat in the referendum on the Justice reform for the Guardasigilli Carlo Nordio. It was, instead, the sentence on the 'paramilitary' Council of the Judiciary, on which the minister clarified during question time in the Chamber of Deputies.

"I have denied at least fifty times that sentence on the paramafiosity of the Csm," Nordio premised, "which was not mine at all but that of a magistrate of the Superior Council of the Magistracy (Nino di Matteo, ed.) whose statement I quoted word for word. That statement was attributed to me and let's say it constitutes a regret, perhaps the greatest regret of this referendum moment, perhaps even worse than the acknowledged defeat we suffered'.

Having said this, the Guardasigilli spoke of the trust received by the government after the resignation of undersecretary Andrea Delmastro and chief of staff Giusi Bartolozzi at the ministry. "There is no provision in any legal system for the Minister of Justice to resign following a negative outcome of a referendum of this type: the trust has already been confirmed by the government and in person by the President of the Council'.

On Bartolozzi, on the other hand, Nordio said that 'she has unceasingly performed her duties with dignity and honour and her spontaneous gesture demonstrates a great sense of responsibility and I trust that the instrumental controversies that have affected her person and the entire ministry will come to an end once and for all. My heartfelt thanks go to her for her extraordinary commitment over these three and a half years, both as deputy and as chief'.
