Santanchè, oppositions present motion of no-confidence. Donzelli (Fdi): resignation a foregone conclusion
After the negative referendum and the note from Palazzo Chigi, the minister faces no-confidence in the House
Morning at the ministry for Daniela Santanchè, who showed up in via di Villa Ada: the Fratelli d'Italia senator flaunted tranquillity after the eviction notice arrived directly from Palazzo Chigi. As she got out of the blue car she was talking on the phone and waved in the direction of the many journalists waiting for her, to whom she made no statements. Same scene on her way out of the building a few hours later. Meanwhile, however, pressure is growing in her party, Fdi, for her to leave office.
The opposition has filed a no-confidence motion in the House that will be discussed on Monday. In the Senate too, the minority has called for a debate on the no-confidence motion, also reiterating the demand that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni return to the House to report. The debate could be as early as Tuesday. It would be the fourth time in four years for Santanchè, who has so far managed to remain in her post despite the judicial trouble.
Malan (FdI): Santanchè will follow the premier's instructions
But what is lacking now is support from the majority. Because after the clamorous note from Palazzo Chigi after the catastrophic outcome of the referendum inviting it to imitate Under-secretary for Justice Andrea Delmastro and the chief of cabinet of the ministry in Via Arenula Giusi Bartolozzi - both of whom resigned - the situation has changed. The step back could come before the case reaches the parliamentary chamber.
"Like all ministers, we will follow the indications of the Prime Minister, but we do not take lessons from those who have restricted the rights of Italians with Dpcm and to avoid parliamentary passage," said Fratelli d'Italia group leader, Lucio Malan, in the Chamber.
"I don't know the timing and manner" of the resignation, but "I take it for granted" that Santanchè's step back will come soon, said Fdi's head of organisation, Giovanni Donzelli.
