It had almost become a curse, but in the end Novak Djokovic managed to break it too: winning his 100th Atp title.
The Serb, who turned 38 only two days ago, won the Geneva tournament.
He thus joins the very small club of tennis players who can boast more than 100 trophies in the pro ranks: the only others are Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors (109).
Djoko beat Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 5-7 7-6 7-6 after more than three hours of play. A sign ahead of the next Roland Garros where Djokovic is aiming for another record, the 25th Slam. "It's a good moment," he said tearfully at the end of the match in front of his family who followed him into the stands.
Djokovic, by winning the Gonet Geneva Open today became the first tennis player in history to win at least one title for 20 different seasons. The first, in 2006, had come in Amersfoort (Netherlands), curiously enough in the final against Nicolas Massu, who was in the stands today, just as a coach of his great opponent on such a special day.
