Regional elections in Calabria will be held on 5 and 6 October. This was announced by the vice-president of the regional government of Calabria, Filippo Pietropaolo, who signed the decree calling the vote. The decree was published in the Region's official gazette.

The stages

.

In the previous days, the Calabria Regional Council had taken note of the resignation formalised by the president of the Roberto Occhiuto council. At the end of the session, the assembly's president, Filippo Mancuso, had dismissed the councillors and dissolved the assembly.

Occhiuto had surprisingly submitted his resignation: 'I signed the letter of resignation,' Occhiuto had written on social media. Opponents, jackals and haters have continuously cheered for the failure of Calabria, and not only to block me. Now the people of Calabria will choose whether our work should continue or not. I will continue personally and together with my Council - as per Article 33 of the Statute - to take care of the Region until election day. I love the Calabrians who have believed in me. I have worked and will continue to work for those who did not believe in me'.

So we are heading towards regional elections in Calabria as well. 'I have decided to resign, but I have also decided to run again, to tell the Calabrians: be the ones to write the future of Calabria, to say whether Calabria should stop or whether this work should continue. In a few weeks, therefore, we will go to vote, and it will be the Calabrians who will decide, not others,' Occhiuto had said in a video on social media. 'I have to consider,' he added, 'what is happening in my administration. In a civilised country no one has to resign because of a warrant notice. But what is happening is that no one is taking responsibility for signing anything."

"I decided to bring you here, to show you this construction site, the Catanzaro metro construction site. But I could have taken you to many other places in Calabria - to Sibari, to the hospital in the Sibaritide; to Vibo, to the hospital in Vibo; to Palmi; to the airport building sites; to the SS106 road construction sites - to show you how many works are being carried out and how many works would like to be stopped today. Who would want to stop them, the judiciary? No,' he says in the video, 'I don't have it in for the judiciary. I am not changing my mind: I have always said that in a complicated region like Calabria, magistrates must do their work calmly. On the other hand, I have clarified everything, I have nothing to fear from the judicial investigation'.

L’inchiesta

On 23 July Occhiuto was interrogated at the Catanzaro Public Prosecutor's Office as part of the investigation in which he is under investigation for corruption. The interrogation, which lasted four hours, was conducted by Assistant Prosecutor Giancarlo Novelli and Deputy Prosecutor Domenico Assumma. Occhiuto had learned that he was involved in the investigation by the Calabrian capital's public prosecutor's office when he was served a notice of extension of the preliminary investigation last June. Together with him, Paolo Posteraro, special secretary to State Secretary Matilde Siracusano, Occhiuto's partner, and Ernesto Ferraro, former sole director of Ferrovie della Calabria, are under investigation.

Salvini: 'Occhiuto was right to resign, he asks citizens for trust'

'For me, the governor of Calabria did well' to resign, 'he made a brave choice. The trial began, the interceptions, the leaks, the bits in the newspapers. And he doesn't ask for trust from the magistrates, he asks for it from the Calabrian citizens'. So says Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister and minister of Infrastructure and Transport, at the Lega in Romagna party.
