The effects of the war in Iran are still to be assessed, but Italian pasta does not seem intent on weakening its global leadership. In 2025 exports reached 2,456,940 tons, an increase of 2.1% compared to 2024 for a total value of 3,969 million euros. According to Unione Italiana Food, which released an elaboration on Istat data, this is 'a result that, despite the delicate geopolitical and geo-economic situation worldwide, confirms the solidity of the sector on foreign markets'.
Italia, with 4.2 million tonnes produced out of a global production of 17 million tonnes and an annual per capita consumption of 23.3 kg, remains the country where pasta is eaten the most but also the one that makes the rest of the world eat it: in 2025, more than 60% of production went to over 200 countries.
About 1.3 million tonnes were destined for EU countries, which accounted for 52% of the total (+4% compared to 2024). Among the most receptive markets in 2025 Uif points out Germany with 466,422 tonnes (+3.7%), the United States with 315,018 tonnes (+4.3%), France with 292,341 tonnes (+4.7%) and the United Kingdom with 279,342 tonnes (-1.4%). "Alongside the historical markets, particularly positive dynamics are evident in Australia (+17.4%), Canada (+9.9%) and Poland (+5.2%), while in the European Union, Spain (+4%) and the Netherlands (+6.4%) are also growing. On a global level, on the other hand, Oceania recorded an increase of 12.9% and America 4.5%, while Asia (-6.7%) and Africa (-7.6%) showed a contraction in volumes, a sign of a heterogeneous and evolving international context," a note from the pasta manufacturers outlines the data.
"Being protagonists in foreign markets, with more than 60% of production exported, means reaffirming the leadership of Italian pasta as an ambassador of Made in Italy in the world," comments Margherita Mastromauro, President of Italian Pasta Makers of Unione Italiana Food. "To the geopolitical uncertainties currently underway, Italian pasta makers have once again responded by demonstrating commitment, passion and the ability to strengthen trade relations with all international partners.
