La Fenice, Beatrice Venezi dismissed. P. Chigi: Meloni not involved
The decision also comes in the wake of public statements by the maestro deemed 'offensive and detrimental to the artistic and professional value' of the staff
Key points
The Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, through the voice of the superintendent Nicola Colabianchi, announces that it has decided to cancel all future collaborations with maestro Beatrice Venezi. The decision, it is explained, comes in the wake of the maestro's repeated and serious public statements, offensive and detrimental to the artistic and professional value of the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice and its orchestra.
"These statements, which I do not agree with in their substance and in the judgments expressed, are incompatible with the principles of the Foundation and with the protection and respect due to orchestra professors".
Accusations of nepotism
Last 22 September, the superintendent appointed Venezi as the Fenice's permanent music director as of 1 October 2026, with a four-year term of office. The Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, underlines Colabianchi, 'reaffirms its commitment to the promotion of a professional environment based on mutual respect, constructive cooperation and artistic excellence'.
The interview given on 23 April to the Argentinean newspaper La Nacion is the straw that broke the camel's back: Venezi has accused the orchestra of nepotism. Since last September, the orchestra and chorus had been in a state of agitation against Venezi's appointment because he was judged to have a curriculum that did not live up to the prestige of La Fenice.
From Giuli, full support for Colabianchi
The Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli takes note of Nicola Colabianchi's decision, taken autonomously and independently, and confirms his complete confidence in the superintendent of La Fenice. "With the hope that this choice will clear the field of misunderstandings, tensions and instrumentalisation of every kind and degree; in the interests of the theatre and the city of Venice".
