Istituto Superiore di Sanità updates guidelines: ultrasound in the first trimester yes, in the third not

News is coming for expectant mothers. The Istituto Superiore di Sanità has updated its 'Physiological Pregnancy' guidelines, introducing important changes to ensure the health of both mother and foetus. The document was developed by the National Centre for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (CNaPPS) during a webinar with over 800 health professionals.

The possibility of undergoing ultrasound scans as early as the first trimester for early detection of foetal malformations has been introduced, in addition to those normally recommended in the second trimester. Chromosomal abnormalities such as Down's syndrome can be diagnosed as early as the first three months of gestation by means of combined testing or foetal DNA. This will be possible regardless of age.

It will also be recommended to measure the distance between the bottom of the uterus and the pubic symphysis at every health check from the sixth month onwards to assess the growth of the baby. Ultrasound scanning towards the date of delivery remains a 'no' unless specifically recommended by the doctor.

"Ultrasound is an extraordinary tool that has revolutionised obstetrical care. However, not everything that is technically possible is clinically appropriate and not everything that is reassuring is really necessary," are the words of Serena Donati, scientific head of the update: "In Italia, an average of six ultrasound scans are performed during pregnancy, with no difference between physiological and pathological pregnancies: far more than those recommended by national and international guidelines.
