"We have to realise that we are experiencing climate change. The challenge is to protect the heritage of the seas. It means not only considering our sea as a great resource but having the duty to know it thoroughly to have all the elements to be able to intervene precisely on protection. Maximum knowledge with respect to what will be in the future also of exploration with respect to critical matters. Our duty today is to put in place all actions to have the maximum knowledge'. So said Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin at the Chamber of Deputies during the conference "Ispra's new oceanographic ship: up to 4,000 metres deep to meet the challenge of climate change".

The rendering of Ipra's new oceanographic ship, a 400 million project financed with NRP funds, was presented to the Chamber of Deputies, as anticipated in Il Sole 24 ore of 15 July. The ship will be called Arcadia. A total of EUR 108 million is earmarked for the construction of the ship, which is scheduled to be launched in June 2026. The ship - which will be built by the Mariotti shipyard in Genoa - is equipped with a remotely-guided system, the Rov (Remote Operating Vehicle), and an autonomous underwater vehicle, the Auv (Automated Unmanned Vehicle), which will be used in scientific missions in extreme environments such as geological exploration, biological surveys, or work on underwater infrastructure. The Rov is a car-sized robot that moves via a system of propellers. It is a wire-guided system, equipped with robotic arms for sampling. On board it carries a small underwater vehicle, a six-metre torpedo capable of taking photos, radar scans and measurements. It has an autonomy of eight hours and can go down to a depth of 3,000 metres.
