Pina Picierno leaves the PD, EU Socialists: 'You also leave the EP vice-presidency'

Vice-President of the Euro Chamber Pina Picierno is leaving the PD. Explaining her reasons in an interview with Il Foglio, in Thursday's print edition, is Picierno herself.
"The house of reformists is no more. One cannot be ambiguous with Putin fascism and extremism. It is time to work on something new, to win the elections," Picierno stressed to the daily edited by Claudio Cerasa. Sources close to the EP vice-president explained to Ansa that Picierno will join the European Democratic Party, of which Sandro Gozi is secretary and which in the Eurocamera is in the Renew group.

'No formal request to leave the S&D group has been submitted. If a request from Pina Picierno were to be formalised, we would expect her to resign from her vice-presidency in the European Parliament." This was stated to Ansa by a spokeswoman of the Socialists and Democrats group in the EP. 'While we recognise that the EP rules technically allow her to keep the position, to do so would be politically inconsistent,' she added. 'Vice-presidencies are the result of negotiations and reflect the weight of the political groups, which means that she holds a position that belongs to the S&D group.
