Pirelli Cyber Tyre: testing gets underway with the Carabinieri’s Alfa Romeos
The Carabinieri and Pirelli have signed an agreement to fit connected tyres to five Tonale vehicles used by the Rome Mobile Patrol Unit. These will help to identify potential risks and improve the vehicles’ efficiency
Pirelli and the General Command of the Carabinieri have signed a memorandum of understanding to trial Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology on vehicles belonging to the Rome Mobile Patrol Unit, with the aim of monitoring the road infrastructure of Rome and identifying potential risk factors, thereby helping to improve road safety.
The initiative begins with the installation of the Pirelli system on five Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles used for patrols and emergency response. The Pirelli Cyber Tyre, in fact, uses sensors integrated into the tyres, proprietary algorithms, advanced computer vision technologies and artificial intelligence to collect and analyse data on the condition of the road network, helping to identify potential issues in a timely manner.
Report road anomalies
In the trial launched, in particular, with the Carabinieri, data from the tyres will be combined with that collected by cameras fitted to vehicles and analysed using artificial intelligence algorithms developed by the technology partner Univrses. The combination of sensors and computer vision will enable the detection of road surface anomalies or issues with road signage, helping to create a constantly updated map of the road network’s condition. The use of Pirelli’s technology will be fully automated and will not require any operators. The Cyber Tyre system has already been used in similar monitoring projects with Movyon, a company within the Autostrade per l’Italia group, and also with the Puglia Region.
