The driver of the bus carrying fans accompanying the Pistoia basketball team died along the Rieti-Terni highway, at the junction of Contigliano, after some fans of the Rieti Sebastiani Basket assaulted the bus that was leaving the city after the A2 championship match, played on Sunday afternoon.
The man was hit by a brick thrown against the windscreen of the vehicle. About ten Rieti fans were heard by the Rieti Mobile Squad about the incident. For the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, it was 'a shocking assault. It is not possible to die like this'.
Mayor of Rieti: 'Despicable act, full justice be done'
"A shocking criminal act. We hope that the dynamics of the facts will be immediately ascertained and that full justice will be done,' said the mayor of Rieti, Daniele Sinibaldi, in a Facebook post after the death of one of the two drivers of the Estra Pistoia supporters' bus, hit with a brick during an assault along the Rieti-Terni highway. The entire Rieti community condemns with indignation this despicable act that has nothing to do with Rieti and sport. We express our closeness to the family of the deceased, to the club, and to the city of Pistoia,' Sinibaldi concluded.
Willful murder investigation
'There has been no particular news since last night. We have opened a file for voluntary manslaughter, at the moment against unknown persons. Several witnesses have been heard, but no possible perpetrators have yet been identified,' the prosecutor of Rieti, Paolo Auriemma, told ANSA regarding last night's ambush on the Rieti-Terni road, with stones and bricks, against a bus carrying Pistoia basketball fans in which one of the drivers of the vehicle lost his life.
Three people stopped
Three people have been arrested in connection with the assault on the Pistoia Basket supporters' bus in Rieti yesterday evening, in which one of the two drivers, Raffaele Marianella, died. According to ANSA, they are individuals linked to extreme right-wing movements. The investigations by the Rieti prosecutors, coordinated by Paolo Auriemma, immediately focused on a group of ultras of the Sebastiani Rieti team, to which the three arrested, who were taken to prison, also belong.
