More than 5,500 valid recommendations from customers and practitioners, certified for quality and veracity by the international analysis company Statista, signalled some seventy companies worthy of inclusion in the list of Consultants of the Year 2025.

The list, like the other rankings launched by Statista and Il Sole 24 Ore (such as Law Firms of the Year, Growth Leaders, Sustainability Leaders, and Stars of the South), is intended to shine a spotlight on excellent companies and organisations in our country, with the aim of understanding the secrets of their success and stimulating emulation and positivity. The consulting sector analysed this time, then, is truly crucial for the sustainable development of the country's system, since the companies in this sector enable - with their advice - the growth of other industries, large and small enterprises, and the public administration.

According to Assoconsult, consultancy will end 2024 with an estimated turnover of more than seven billion euro, which is also growing thanks to the role played in transforming projects and NRP calls into open construction sites and accurately reported operations. The twin transitions, the digital and green transitions, have also driven demand for the services offered by consultants who are trained and constantly updated on regulations, tools and strategies.

The List

.

Returning to the list of Consultants of the Year, it is not surprising that the big companies in the industry are on the list. But alongside them stand boutiques and companies of professionals who have received rave reviews from clients and colleagues, with whom they evidently collaborate with clear benefits. The complete lists, relating to each functional sector and industry, are published on the Lab24 website of Il Sole 24 Ore, while a global summary is published in this Consulting Report.

"4,500 consultants active in Italy were invited to participate in the research and all companies in the sector were offered the opportunity to self-nominate themselves online and submit to the survey in which clients and colleagues took part," explains Lisa Dei, an analyst at Statista based in Hamburg, Germany. "The rankings were obtained on the basis of the total number of recommendations received in the functional and industry areas considered in the research. Within each list, consulting firms with a sufficient number of recommendations are presented in alphabetical order. The top 10 award-winning consultancies, with evidence of the prevailing functional or industrial area of activity, includes the largest consultancies worldwide. A clearly positive message, given the dominance of large consultancies in the consulting landscape in Italy'.

Within the questionnaires intended for consultants and clients, some questions were added in order to better understand opinions on the future evolution of the environment in which consultancy firms will be called upon to operate.

"A sample of 623 consultants and 757 clients interviewed sorted through, from most to least relevant, the biggest threats for Italian consultancy firms in the next three years," explains Lisa Dei. "One surprising finding that emerged is that artificial intelligence is perceived as a threat by the vast majority of respondents. On the contrary, it is not surprising that, in a context of geopolitical instability due to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, with all the repercussions on the cost of raw materials and the consequences of the post-pandemic, the economic slowdown represents a source of great concern'.

New Frontiers

.

As for the sector's development levers, artificial intelligence reappears in first place, a cross and a delight, then, followed by digitalisation and sustainability. "This is a very topical issue," continues Dei, "in which consultancy firms are deeply involved, given that they are actively supporting companies in defining ESG (environmental, social and governance) plans, certifications and reporting. Other areas of interest concern consultancy to identify new business models, corporate reorganisations, operations & supply chain, M& A and corporate restructuring'.

51.3 per cent of the respondents expect an increase in their collaboration with consulting companies in the coming years, while a further 39.4 per cent state that they neither want to increase nor decrease this collaboration. This is certainly a positive sign for the Italian consulting industry, adding to the excellent results and growth targets already achieved in recent years.

The sectors

.

"Analysing the functional areas in which clients anticipate future collaboration with consultancies," Dei explains, "it is significant to note the dominant position of data analytics, big data and artificial intelligence. This figure, which is consistent with the sentiment expressed in previous answers by consultants and clients, highlights how the world of data and artificial intelligence can represent an element of strong discontinuity for many industries. And it shows that Italian companies are increasingly focusing on core business optimisation and data-driven decision-making to maintain competitiveness'.
