Record drought on the Po in Cremona: 8.59 metres below the hydrometric zero
“The River Po is in a situation never seen before: in Cremona, it has even surpassed the record low set during the 2022 drought. The River Basin Authority has declared a high level of water stress across the entire district, and in the Delta the flow rate is now below the threshold required to prevent the intrusion of salt water from the sea. These are not alarmist claims from ‘climate fanatics’, but official figures. This means closed irrigation intakes, crops at risk, land damaged by salt and possible difficulties even with regard to drinking water.” This was stated on 3 August 2026 by M5S Senator Elena Sironi.
On 31 July in Cremona, the lowest negative level was recorded, dropping to eight metres and 59 centimetres below the hydrometric zero.
“And yet,” she continued, “the Meloni government continues to treat the climate crisis as an ideological fabrication. The PNRR had allocated 357 million for 56 projects to renaturalise the River Po, which are essential for restoring space to the river and making the area more resilient to droughts and floods. According to the WWF, only 13 of these have been completed, using around 200 million. We need the immediate release of water from hydroelectric reservoirs and the completion of the structural works.”

Lombardy: Region allocates 56.5 million for a new road bridge between Ostiglia and Revere
A new road bridge over the River Po between Ostiglia and Revere to make connections between the two banks of the Mantua area safer and more efficient. The Lombardy Regional Executive, following a proposal by the Councillor for Infrastructure and Public Works, Claudia Maria Terzi, has approved the draft agreement with ANAS for the construction of the new road deck along State Road 12 ‘dell’Abetone e del Brennero’.
