"I thought of taking the name of Leo XIV. There are several reasons, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII, with the historic Encyclical Rerum novarum, addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution; and today the Church offers to all its heritage of social doctrine to respond to another industrial revolution and to developments in artificial intelligence, which bring new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and work," said the new Pontiff, who met with the cardinals for two hours in the Synod's New Hall. Leo XIV gave a speech and gave space for free interventions by the cardinals.

Leo XIV surprise visit to Genazzano Sanctuary

And in the meantime, Pope Leo XIV made a surprise visit to the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Genazzano, some thirty kilometres from Rome. The Pontiff is very devoted to Our Lady of Good Counsel. And this is not the first time Prevost has visited the shrine in the Castelli Romani, he has always done so at every important appointment, such as when he became prior general of the Augustinians, bishop, cardinal and now pope. He was in a dark sedan, sitting next to the driver. On his arrival, the Pontiff greeted the faithful and the crowd that had meanwhile gathered in the small square at the entrance to the sanctuary. Already last 25 April, the then Cardinal had celebrated Mass at the Marian Sanctuary of Genazzano, on the occasion of the Feast of the 'Coming' of the Mother of Good Counsel.

Prayer at the Tomb of Francis

Pope Leo XIV also laid a white rose on the tomb of Pope Francis, who is buried at Santa Maria Maggiore where the Pontiff went for a private prayer. Prevost lingered moved before the tomb of his predecessor and devoted himself to prayer, also stopping to pray before the icon of the Virgin Salus Populi Romani. "I live a few steps away, I was passing by to visit a friend when I saw the train of cars and they told me it was the Pope, so I stayed. It was an incredible surprise, especially for those of us who live here, to have such a closeness with the Holy Father in this way, a sharing of the neighbourhood, is something that makes me proud," commented a lady who witnessed the arrival of Leo XIV at Santa Maria Maggiore.

Lion's new coat of arms

"In illo uno unum". The Vatican secretariat of state on social media released the official coat of arms of Pope Leo XIV , "In Christ we are one". A curiosity: Pope Leo XIV still has his residence in the Palace of the former Holy Office. Leo has not yet decided on a possible new residence.

Tsarahazana, Cardinal of Madagascar: got more than 100 votes

Indiscretions from the Conclave were not supposed to be there, but something is beginning to leak out. There was a huge consensus for Pope Leo XIV in the Sistine Chapel. Almost a plebiscite listening to the indiscretions that emerged from the first lines of the cardinals as they left the first mass with Leo XIV in the Sistine Chapel. "This morning's meeting went very well. we also talked about the need to make the church more collegial," said Cardinal Désiré Tsarahazana of Madagascar, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toamasina, upon leaving the new Pope's first meeting with the cardinals who had come to Rome for the Conclave. "He is a very good Pope and he had much more than 100 votes," he said.

Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai: a pontiff balancing contemplation and action

The Pontiff's meeting today with the cardinals is a "sign that he wants to listen to us" and that Pope Prevost's will be "a collegial pontificate", Archbishop Emeritus of Mumbai Cardinal Oswald Gracias told AsiaNews. A Pope "firmly rooted in the faith, shaped by St Augustine, the 'doctor of grace', when he states that the Church must illuminate 'the dark nights of this world'," the cardinal added. "I think Pope Leo brings hope, expectations and a new freshness, the freshness of the Holy Spirit, which will give new energy," said Gracias who said he was convinced that "while Pope Leo's pontificate will be influenced by that of Pope Francis as a point of reference, he will still have his own style. Immediately after his election, we saw him step onto the balcony wearing the traditional papal robes and I know that he will be a bridge within the Church as well'. And he pointed out that "during one of my meetings with Cardinal Provest, I asked him about his Augustinian formation and he replied: 'Balance between contemplation and action'".

Thanksgiving to Cardinal Re

Pope Leo XIV made a brief greeting to the Cardinal Dean. "I thank the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re - he deserves an applause, at least one if not more -, whose wisdom, the fruit of a long life and many years of faithful service to the Apostolic See, has greatly helped us during this time. I thank the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell - I believe he is present here - for the valuable and challenging role he has played during the time of the Sede Vacante and the Convocation of the Conclave'. He recalled the cardinals who, for health reasons, were unable to be present, "with you I embrace them in a communion of affection and prayer".

Thoughts for Pope Francis

There was no lack of thoughts from Leo for Pope Francis: "At this moment, at once sad and happy, providentially enveloped in the light of Easter, I would like us to look together at the departure of the late Holy Father Francis and at the Conclave as an Easter event, a stage in the long exodus through which the Lord continues to guide us towards the fullness of life". And he entrusted the soul of the late Pontiff and also the future of the Church to the "merciful Father and God of all consolation".

Paul VI with cardinals

Pope Prevost, meeting the cardinals, quoted Paul VI's message to the entire human family of 22 June 1963: "Dear brothers and sisters, I would like to conclude this first part of our meeting by making my own - and proposing to you as well - the wish that St Paul VI, in 1963, placed at the beginning of his Petrine ministry: 'Let it pass over the whole world like a great flame of faith and love, which will kindle all men of good will, enlighten their paths of mutual collaboration, and draw upon humanity, still and always, the abundance of divine complacency, the very power of God, without the help of Whom, nothing is valid, nothing is holy."

Tomorrow is also scheduled the Jubilee of the Bands in which about 60 thousand participants are expected.
