Electric? No thanks! At Porsche, they could not switch from an endothermic to a 100% electric powertrain for their iconic model, the 911, thus risking betraying sixty years of undisputed leadership among thoroughbred sports cars. Many have tried to challenge a supremacy that has always been the flagship of the 911, without ever quite succeeding. So it is that from the magic cylinder of the Zuffenhausen designers came the hybrid solution that can satisfy even the most die-hard drivers because it keeps the car's weight down to human levels and even increases performance.

The abbreviation for the new hybrid is T-Hybrid

.

Exploiting know-how acquired in racing that has always seen its cars in the limelight, Porsche is now ready to offer a hybrid solution that fits into the overall construction concept of the 911 and, above all, improves its performance. How it is quickly said. The T-Hybrid system of the new 911 Carrera GTS is equipped with a newly developed electric exhaust gas turbocharger. Thanks to the electric unit integrated between the compressor and the turbine, the optimum operating speed can be reached quickly to ensure a much more immediate boost of the thermal as well.

Porsche 911 Hybrid, the battery

.

The electric motor also acts as a generator, providing an additional 15 horsepower for a more dynamic delivery. The powertrain also has a permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The result is up to 150 Nm more drive torque and a power increase of 40 kW. The electric motors are complemented by a high-voltage battery (400 volts). Porsche has also opted for a very light lithium-ion battery for the 12-volt electrical system for on-board services.

The thermal boxer engine is much more compact

.

At the heart of the T-Hybrid system is still the 3.6-litre boxer engine, but more compact with an increased bore of 97 mm and a longer stroke of 81 mm, resulting in an increase in displacement of 0.6 litres. The engine is also equipped with camshaft adjustment to maintain the ideal ratio between fuel and air mixture over the entire operating range. Thus conceived, the engine delivers a basic 485 hp for a system output of 541 hp and a power increase of 61 hp that improves 0-100 but reduces CO2 and with a weight increase of only 50 kg.

New suspension matched to the 911 T-Hybrid

.

The new 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid comes with a revised suspension. A steered rear axle is now standard, which increases stability at high speeds and reduces the turning radius. As an alternative to the hybrid, Porsche offers a 911 Carrera with the 3,000 cc boxer engine in a revised version with a power increase to 394 hp, which translates into 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.1 seconds and a speed of 294 km/h. For both new 911s, there are seven types of wheels. The hybrid version offers 21-inch wheels with an 11.5-inch width as standard.

There is no plug-in hybrid solution

.

The T-Hybrid solution effectively ruled out even for the future the possibility of a plug-in variant of the iconic 911 on the basis of the choice made by Porsche engineers who considered it an option that would not be compatible with a sports car in terms of both increased weight and driving dynamics. What remains at this point is the curiosity of testing the new Porsche 911 hybrid on the road to confirm the work done by the brand's engineers to make it not only brighter and with performance as satisfying as that of the thermal versions, but also more sustainable in terms of emissions and consumption.

Many aesthetic innovations for the new 911

.

In addition to the engine innovations focused mainly on the hybrid, the new Porsche 911 adds aesthetic innovations at the front with air intakes that are larger than the current ones as well as having vertical instead of horizontal fins. Also changing is the design of the headlights, both front and rear with four-point graphics. The number plate is also moved higher to accommodate the two exhaust tailpipes in the centre. The 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid features a specific sports exhaust as standard. Finally, there is an optional aerodynamic kit that offers an exclusive front bumper marked Sport Design.

Inside, the instrument panel is digital

.

In the coupé variants, Porsche has designed the interior of the new 911 with a two-seat configuration as standard. The 2+2 configuration is available as an option at no extra cost. The 911 features a digital instrument cluster for the first time. The 12.6-inch curved screen, which can be customised, offers up to seven display options, including a Classic display inspired by the Porsche instrument cluster with five round gauges and a tachometer in the centre. Porsche Communication Management in all Porsches is operated from the high-resolution 10.9-inch central screen.

New connectivity features coming soon

.

The new 911 also features new connectivity functions. A QR code simplifies the process of accessing the PCM via Porsche ID. Apple CarPlay, which is integrated into the car and displays information on the instrument panel, allows functions to be used directly in the Apple ecosystem, e.g. via the Siri voice assistant. For the first time, the video streaming service is also available on demand while parked. Apps such as Spotify and Apple Music can be used as app n even without a smartphone connected to the car. The 911 is in line with the rest of the range.

List prices of the new 911 range (992.2)

.

And we come to the availability of the new Porsche 911, which for the Carrera is offered in Coupé and Cabriolet versions, both with rear-wheel drive. While for the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid variants are available with all-wheel drive and the Targa body option offered with all-wheel drive only. And we come to pricing, the new 911 Carrera coupe version is on sale at a starting price of 133,686 euros. List prices for the 911 Carrera GTS Coupé start at €177,518.
