Vladimir Putin was welcomed by Xi Jinping in China, where he arrived at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). While talks on a way out of the war in Ukraine seem to be stalled, with the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky looking increasingly distant, Putin is turning to the East.

Xi welcomed the Russian president with a 'red carpet' and greeted him with a warm handshake. The two also talked about the August summit with Donald Trump held in Alaska. "Our contacts with the Americans were discussed," Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov reported. The summit, in which Russia, China, India and other countries are participating, is called the "Axis of Revolt" and officially positions itself as a coalition antithetical to the West.
