Regeni, Ginella Vocca resigns from the Cinema Commission. The ministry prepares a review of the system
In a forthcoming decree, the rules for the establishment and functioning of evaluation bodies will be revised
The director and founder of the MedFilm Festival, Ginella Vocca, has sent a letter to Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli informing him of her resignation from the Cinema selective commission of the MiC, at the centre of the controversy over the exclusion from public funding of Simone Manetti's documentary Giulio Regeni - Tutto il male del mondo', on the story of the Italian researcher, kidnapped, tortured and killed in Egypt.
The letter to the minister
Vocca wrote to Giuli that she had 'dutifully waited for his intervention in Parliament, which I agree with in form and substance, before dissolving the reservation and resigning. In this regard, she confirms that she was 'firmly opposed to the rejection of the documentary, "witnessed by my own colleagues to whom I pointed out in writing via email and verbally at the meeting how wrong it was, in every respect, to reject the film".
That 'was not the only time I found myself in disagreement,' he adds, 'but that is understandable in a plurality of visions. And so I felt it was possible to continue and try to make my voice heard from within, defending, even successfully, other projects that risked being rejected for reasons that, at least to me, seemed incomprehensible. I resisted, guided by the thought that putting the Commission in crisis, with the whole of the Second Session still to be examined, was a serious and irresponsible act towards the hundreds of operators in the sector awaiting our deliberations. I had accepted the appointment because I believe in the value of commissions and selective choices, and I put my long professional experience in the film industry to use. Hoping for a quick overcoming of the crisis,' he concludes in the text, 'thanking you again for your trust, I place my appointment in your hands'. Vocca adds with Ansa that she remains confident, however, 'that, as is the minister's intention, we can rebuild the system that distributes funds quickly, for the good of the entire sector'.
Giuli thanks, working on reform
The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, thanks Ginella Vocca for her work in the Cinema Commission of Experts for the attribution of selective contributions and for the sensitivity expressed through her choice, certain that the collaboration already begun will continue. As far as the commission system is concerned, the Ministry is working on an overall revision of the rules of constitution and operation by means of a special decree.
