Remote locations: monthly incentives of 2,000 euros for doctors and 1,000 for nurses and radiologists
The measures adopted by the Region also include permanent appointments, additional allowances and housing support
Competitions and incentives of up to 2,000 euros a month for doctors and nurses who decide to work in remote locations. This is what the new measure adopted by the Regional Executive of Sardinia sets out to address the problem of staff shortages in outlying areas. Specifically, the scheme provides for permanent contracts, additional allowances and housing support for doctors, nurses and radiology technicians who serve for at least eighteen months in locations and departments across Sardinia characterised by particularly difficult conditions or staff shortages.
Ensuring service continuity
The initiative aims to strengthen staffing levels in areas where it is most difficult to recruit and retain professionals, due to challenges relating to distance, transport links and demographic characteristics, in order to ensure the continuity of services and essential levels of care.
“We know that the shortage of healthcare staff is one of the most difficult problems to tackle,” emphasises the Regional President and Councillor for Health. “That is why we are working on several fronts, from recruitment to incentives, to make those locations where it is currently most difficult to provide services more attractive.”
The funds are already provided for in the regional budget amendment act of 21 September 2026: €6.5 million for 2026, €12.6 million for 2027 and €14,536,800 for each year from 2028 to 2030.
The guidelines provide for a regional allowance for working in difficult locations, in addition to the ordinary salary, amounting to 2,000 euros gross per month for doctors and 1,000 euros gross per month for nurses and medical radiology technicians. The allowance is linked to the level of hardship or the specific challenges of the location or operational unit and is to be defined as part of the supplementary remuneration package.
