The revamped S-Class debuts and Mercedes celebrates its 140th anniversary. All the novelties
The brand of the three-pointed star celebrates its first 140 years with the restyling of the flagship that has always introduced major technological innovations that spread throughout the German brand's range and revolutionised the car industry
Mercedes updates the S-Class and introduces new styling and content. The list price starts at around 122,000 euros. We were in Stuttgart to preview it during an international press event.
More than 50 per cent novelty in more than 5 metres length
Always a paragon of luxury and technology, the S-Class represents a benchmark within the entire Mercedes range as it is here that the brand introduces the innovations that are then cascaded to all lower segment models.
Based on the MRA II (Modular Rear Architecture) modular floorpan, the S-Class has generous dimensions: 5.304 mm long (5.194 mm for the short wheelbase), 1.921 mm wide, 1.503 mm high and with a wheelbase ranging from 3.216 mm for the long-wheelbase version to 3.106 mm for the shortest.
With an update affecting more than 50 per cent of the car, the S-Class for the first time features an aesthetic novelty that recalls history: the illuminated star on the bonnet is available as an option. In addition, it shows a 20 per cent larger illuminated radiator grille and the new, next-generation Digital Light headlamps with double star, equipped with innovative micro-Led technology that offers a high-resolution illumination field that is around 40 per cent wider.
Debut of the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System
Inside the cabin, the new Superscreen (standard) and the latest generation Mbux stand out, bringing the AI-based 'Hey Mercedes' Virtual Assistant with natural dialogue, an improved Zero Layer interface and Google Maps-based navigation to the S-Class. The 14.4-inch central display and 12.3-inch passenger screen are placed under a single continuous glass surface, creating a sculptural visual unit. While the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, optionally available in 3D, appears to float behind the steering wheel.
