Samsung Wallet and Volkswagen: the digital key arrives on the ID electric range
The system utilises UWB and NFC technologies, whilst an update to software version ID 6.0.1 is required to activate the digital key
With the physical key in your pocket, you can get into your car simply by walking up to it. This is the latest development to emerge from the new partnership between Samsung and Volkswagen, which extends the functionality of the Samsung Wallet digital key to the German brand’s entire range of electric vehicles.
The update applies to models in the ID range, including the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3 Neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID.Buzz. Drivers with a compatible Galaxy smartphone can now unlock, lock and start the engine without having to take their smartphone out or search for the remote control in their pocket.
Behind this ‘immediacy’ lies an advanced technological system that meets the requirements set by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). The platform uses Ultra-Wideband to recognise the user and Near Field Communication technology for proximity operations. It’s not just for getting in or out of your car: the app also allows you to open the boot remotely and share access to the vehicle with trusted individuals, setting up temporary permissions or revoking them when necessary with just a few taps on the screen.
Security remains a cornerstone of the project. Digital keys are stored directly on the device and protected by the Samsung Knox platform, which meets EAL6+ standards against unauthorised access. Should the smartphone be lost, the Samsung Find service allows you to lock it or remotely revoke access, ensuring complete peace of mind for the owner.
The new feature has been available in Europe since 18 August for Volkswagen vehicles fitted with ID 6.0.1 software – that is, all those manufactured from 27 April 2026 onwards.
