Sardinia: €520 million for centres, technology and pandemic prevention
The allocation of the national healthcare investment programme has been finalised
Key points
A €520 million plan to refurbish healthcare facilities and modernise the regional healthcare system’s technology, as well as to implement measures to prevent the risk of pandemics. This is the content of the resolution approved by the Regional Executive of Sardinia, which sets out the framework for the resources allocated to Sardinia under the national healthcare investment programme provided for in Article 20 of Law 67 of 1988, and initiates the process for their planning and subsequent use.
Resources
“The review carried out with the Ministry of Health has identified €451.5 million in remaining funds, available as at 31 December 2025 for the signing of new Programme Agreements, to which are added €47.5 million euros allocated by ministerial decree of 21 January 2026, to be used during the period 2027–2036,” the Department of Health has announced. “In total, the funds amount to approximately 499 million euros.”
With this resolution, the Region is launching a new phase of investment planning, ‘based on the priority needs of the Sardinian healthcare system, the condition of existing facilities and the need to upgrade technological equipment’. The Region is supported in this endeavour by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti under the InvestEU protocol signed with the Ministry of Health. ‘The Region,’ the department emphasises, ‘has been identified as the first case in which the collaboration model developed at national level is to be applied.’
The plan
For the President of the Region and acting Councillor for Health, Alessandra Todde, the available resources must be ‘translated into concrete planning, based on the needs of local areas and the conditions of our hospitals and healthcare facilities’. “The work we have begun with the Ministry of Health and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti will enable us to set priorities and speed up the implementation of measures,” she adds. “We want to use these resources to improve the quality of services and ensure that citizens have access to facilities that are more modern, safer and better suited to their healthcare needs.”
The process involves assessing the needs of healthcare organisations, reviewing the measures already planned, and defining the criteria for setting investment priorities. On this basis, proposals will be drawn up for the new Programme Agreements to be signed with the Ministry of Health, which are necessary in order to proceed with the use of the resources.
