Sixty million euros to counter the effects of high fuel prices. This is the sum that the Region of Sardinia has allocated in the latest budget amendment to support the sectors most affected.

The announcement

The measure is explained by the President of the Region, Alessandra Todde, in a video message.

“High fuel prices aren’t just a burden when we fill up our tanks. They weigh heavily on those who produce and work every day, on our farms, on those who transport goods and on those who buy them,” emphasises the President of the Region. “On an island like Sardinia, where transport and connections are essential, every price rise has even more severe consequences. That is why we have decided to take action. In the latest budget amendment, we have allocated 60 million euros to counter the effects of high fuel prices.”

Of the total, the president emphasises, “50 million has been allocated to support the most vulnerable sectors, from road haulage to the maritime sector, including agriculture, to which we have allocated 25 million, whilst the remaining funds will support sectors such as road haulage and the maritime sector’.

Funding of 10 million euros is also earmarked for companies operating in the stone industry, which, like the agri-food sector, have long been forced to contend with the effects of high fuel prices.

Air transport

The Region is also focusing on air transport, which is essential for those needing to travel to the mainland. In this case, the allocation amounts to 10 million euros.

Funds allocated ‘to mitigate the impact of aviation fuel costs on territorial continuity’. The allocated funds should also protect the fares (subsidised and fixed) under the so-called territorial continuity scheme from any price rises. The scheme is aimed at residents of Sardinia, students and workers.

Emergency and urgent care

However, that is not all. The President has also announced a new measure ‘specifically for the emergency and urgent care sector’. The measure, which will be included in the budget bill, will cover the costs associated with the use of ambulances.

“Through these measures, we aim to protect the production system, safeguard the purchasing power of Sardinians, and guarantee their right to travel and receive medical treatment on fair terms,” he adds. “Being an island cannot mean paying more every time there is an international crisis.”
