'Early elections? I hope so'' Elly Schlein, interviewed by Ferruccio de Bortoli at the Trento Festival of Economics, does not shy away from questions. Even when they veer onto the subject of the next general election. 'We are prepared, absolutely competitive, the game is already open. We are coming from very important local elections, I was in Genoa yesterday at Silvia Salis, the day before in Assisi, and this evening I will be in Ravenna. All the alternative forces to the right united around a concrete programme that speaks of proximity. We are already showing in the cities we govern that we are able to get along. We are stubbornly united because our adversary is the right-wing,' Schlein urges.
Italy must be in the front row towards a just peace
But the news inevitably leads to the topic of foreign policy. "Where there is talk of a negotiation towards a just peace, Italy must be in the front row. I am happy that the president has proved us right by participating in the calls with Trump before and after the contacts with Putin. I believe that we must stand side by side with Ukraine, because a negotiation can be done taking into account the reasons of those who have suffered the invasion. Our idea is to be there. It is clear that security guarantees will have to be built. But in the meantime stay there and build a just peace for Ukraine,' argued the PD secretary. 'I welcome these latest developments of triangulation between European leaders and Trump's US. But now it is up to us as Europe to do our part, to present ourselves united at that table and succeed in securing both Ukraine's and the European Union's interests."
We must make the Next Generation Eu structural
.As for Europe and its future, the Dem leader put it this way: 'We must make the Next Generation Eu structural in order to demonstrate European solidarity'. And again: 'It's time to focus on a more political Europe and the battle to be done that Meloni is not doing is to overcome unanimity and finally bring forward the great intuition of the Next Generation Eu, to overcome national egoisms and vetoes. I would immediately ask the government to make 750 million common investments per year in a plan that brings together social, industrial and common European defence priorities. None of our member states alone can compete with the race on innovation of the US and China, only the EU can pool resources and expertise to keep up with the giants around us," the Dem secretary added. "There has been a drop in industrial production for 25 months, one of the sectors most in crisis is the car industry, we must imagine funds that go to support the sectors in crisis, to accompany the ecological transition. Or on housing: the housing emergency is also felt by companies, because there are workers who cannot find housing because the prices are too high for the expected salary. I imagine a European fund for the energy efficiency of houses,' Schlein concluded.
The commitment against the mafia must be constant
.Schlein then dwells on the anniversary of the Capaci stage: 'Today I cannot but recall that on 23 May we honour the memory of Judge Falcone, his wife, and all the men of his escort who were victims at Capaci. We reconfirm the commitment that must be constant in order to grasp the lesson of how to fight the mafia phenomenon that still exists and affects the legal economy of our country and beyond'.
On referendum Rai bent to the interests of the government
Aggrieved also about upcoming electoral appointments, Schlein glosses over when asked about the next Dem assembly: 'The next PD congress? In the meantime we are focused on the administrative elections and the very important referendum on 8 and 9 June, we do not like easy challenges. We are very committed to informing people and I think it is serious that there are government representatives who invite people to defect. Voting is a right but also a duty. We are also committed to the regional elections. These are the party's priorities. Those who talk little about the referendum are public television and it is a shame to see RAI bent to the interests of the majority and the government'.
