2026/27 school year, regional calendar: Bolzano opens, Puglia closes, Rosolini postpones due to the heat

The first bell of the 2026/27 school year rings out. Bolzano is the first to mark the start of the new term, which affects almost 8 million pupils across Italia.

Residents of the autonomous province will be the first in Italia to return to school: over 85,000 children and young people, of whom 22,080 attend Italian-language schools and 64,759 attend German-language schools.

Following on from the pupils in the autonomous province, those from the Province of Trento, the Aosta Valley and the Veneto will take their exams on 10 September.

On 14 September, pupils in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Piedmont and Umbria will return to school; on 15 September, those in Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Sicily and Tuscany; and on 16 September, those in Abruzzo, Basilicata and Sardinia. Puglia will be the last region to resume in-person teaching, on 17 September.

But there are already exceptions, due in part to the high temperatures which, once again for this new school year, have sparked the inevitable controversy: the mayor of a Sicilian town, Rosolini – a town of just over 20,000 inhabitants in the province of Syracuse – has decided to postpone the start of the new 2026–27 school year by one week.
