Former South Korean premier Han Duck-soo was sentenced to 23 years in prison for his role in the 3 December 2024 martial law attempt. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency.
Han 'ignored his duty and responsibility as prime minister until the end,' said Lee Jin-gwan, judge of the Seoul Central District Court, during the reading of the verdict broadcast live on TV. We sentence the defendant to 23 years in prison'.
The former premier, according to the court, played a major role in the clumsy and brief attempt to declare martial law by Yoon Suk-yeol, on whom the special prosecutor's office's request for a death sentence for insurrection hangs.
On 14 December 2024, Han Duck-soo had become the acting president of South Korea, after the second impeachment vote of incumbent President Yoon Suk-yeol, vbeing impeached a few days later, on 27 December and replaced by Choi Sang-mok, the Deputy Prime Minister.
The Central District Court issued the first ruling in the case that gave rise to the most serious and dramatic institutional crisis in the young South Korean democracy, the worst since the end of military rule 40 years ago.
