The United States and the United Kingdom are rushing to finalise deals on nuclear reactors, artificial intelligence data centres and whisky, ahead of Donald Trump's state visit to London, marked by the dismissal of the British ambassador Lord Peter Mandelson over the Epstein case.
OpenAi set to land in the UK
.The Financia Times writes. OpenAI is set to announce the UK entry of its $500 billion Stargate data centre project, as part of a series of technology partnerships and business deals to coincide with the US president's visit next week. The UK-US technology partnership was described by Mandelson - sacked this week from his ambassadorial post in Washington for his links to the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein - as his "personal pride and joy".
The backlash of the Epstein case
.Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's decision to discharge Mandelson is likely to anger Trump, who is trying to shake off his past ties with Epstein. Starmer, according to the Ft, hopes to present the tycoon's three-day visit as an opportunity to promote Britain and a signal that his growth strategy is bearing fruit, as well as cementing a partnership to challenge China's in critical technologies.
Treaty also on energy and tariffs
Energy cooperation, security and tariffs on steel will also be on the agenda, but the economic focus will be on technology. Sam Altman of OpenAI and Jensen Huang of chip manufacturer Nvidia will join Trump in the US delegation. According to sources briefed on the plans, they will launch the investment Stargate Uk in the Northumberland town of Blyth. Nscale, a British data centre company for artificial intelligence, will also be involved in the project.
"The UK provides the power, Nvidia the chips and OpenAI the intellectual property. The UK gets sovereign artificial intelligence,' said a person involved in the project. In January, Altman was at Trump's side at the White House to announce Stargate, which he said would include electrical infrastructure and data centres and pave the way for the next phase of artificial intelligence.
