Stellantis, maker of Ram and Jeep trucks, said on Thursday it had temporarily laid off 900 workers at five US plants following President Donald Trump's announcement of tariffs and temporarily suspended production at an assembly plant in Mexico and Canada. The US plants affected are powertrain production and moulding plants.

The Windsor Assembly in Stellantis, where the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and Dodge Charger Daytona are produced, will be closed for a fortnight, while the Toluca Assembly, where the Jeep Compass and Jeep Wagoneer S are produced, will be closed for the entire month of April, the company said.

"Stellantis continues to assess the effects of the recently announced US tariffs on imported vehicles and will continue to engage with the US administration on these policy changes," the company disclosed, noting that "among the immediate actions we must take is the temporary suspension of production at some of our Canadian and Mexican assembly plants, which will affect some of our US manufacturing and moulding facilities that support these activities."

Meanwhile, Fitch cut Stellantis' rating to BBB from BBB+. The outlook is stable. This is stated in a note, which explains that the downgrade reflects the worsening market conditions in North America and increased cost pressures as a result of the tariffs imposed on cars.
