Tajani: Two Italian activists from the flotilla have been released in Libya

“I am delighted to announce the release of Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia, the two Italian activists from the Flotilla, who had beenheld for a month in Libya. Along with them, Matias Alvarez Rodriguez, a Uruguayan with Italian citizenship, has also been entrusted to the care of our Consul in Benghazi; we have been monitoring and assisting him over the past few days.”

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani posted this on X: “Thanks to intensive diplomatic efforts, coordinated between the Foreign Ministry and Palazzo Chigi, they will finally be returning to Italia tomorrow. I would like to thank the staff at the Farnesina and our intelligence services for their excellent work.”

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for 30 days. We are absolutely delighted at the release of Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia. This is a very important moment for us because tomorrow would have marked exactly one month since their detention in Libya began on 24 May.” These are the words of Maria Elena Delia, the Flotilla’s Italian spokesperson. “We can’t wait to embrace them again,” she emphasised. “There will be time later to analyse what has happened. We would like to thank all those involved in resolving this situation, but above all the members of civil society who were holding a vigil until yesterday and who have never stopped calling for the release of our 10 comrades throughout this week.”
