The objective is clear: to give an acceleration to the execution capacity of the group, which, with the business plan update presented last March, aims to invest EUR 17.7 billion over five years, an increase of EUR 1.2 billion (+7%) over the same time period of the previous plan. It is no coincidence, therefore, that Terna has made it possible for about 800 million euro in development infrastructure to come into operation before the start of this year, confirming its commitment to supporting the country's energy transition path.
"Terna's works that have come into operation from 2023 to date, for over two billion euros of investment, make energy transmission safer and the grid more flexible," commented Terna's CEO, Giuseppina Di Foggia. "The submarine connection with the island of Elba, the reinforcement of the Sicilian electricity grid, the new interconnections with Austria and France: sustainable infrastructures that strengthen the grid and allow for the integration of new renewable energy. The group's number one also recalls that, in the same period, 'more than 80 projects have been authorised, for a record value of more than six billion euros. The main works are already underway: large infrastructures that unite the country and increase the efficiency of the grid, making it capable of better managing peaks in demand and transporting energy from the generation points to the areas with the highest consumption. This is confirmation of our ability to execute. And we will continue in this way: to ensure that Italy has a more reliable electricity system that is ready for the challenges of the future.
By 2025, more than 300 kilometres of power connections have been built, designed to ensure, is the line dictated by the group, 'the utmost attention to solutions with a reduced environmental impact'. Among the main works are those for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, with over 130 kilometres of underground power lines to ensure a more robust and reliable grid. In Sicily, the 380 kV Paternò-Pantano-Priolo power line was also completed, a key work for the regional electricity system, which contributes to improving service continuity and supporting the integration of renewable sources.
These interventions are in addition to other important infrastructures that will be operational from 2023, such as the underground cable interconnection between Italy and France and that between Italy and Austria, which will increase the exchange capacity and strengthen the stability of the energy system in the Alpine regions, and the Elba-Continent connection, the submarine power line that doubles the connection lines between the island's grid and Piombino (Livorno).
As for the authorisation front, which, like the start of operations, has experienced a decisive acceleration, to date the Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security and the competent regional councillors have given the go-ahead to 36 new Terna projects distributed throughout Italy, for a total investment of EUR 1 billion. The main projects authorised in 2025 include the rationalisation of the grid in western Brianza, the new electricity station in Volpago (Treviso), and the electrification of the docks in the port of La Spezia, the first in Italy in this field. To these are added the reorganisation of Rome's South-West Quadrant, to increase the efficiency of the capital's network, and the construction of the new Perdasdefogu (Nuoro) electricity station to ensure greater resilience in an area subject to frequent snowfall.
