The Ministry of Defence budget by functions
The budget of the Ministry of Defence is divided into functions: the Defence Function includes all the expenditure necessary for the performance of the institutional tasks of the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as the Inter-Forces Area and the administrative and technical-industrial structure of the Ministry. In turn, the Territorial Security Function includes all the appropriations allocated to the Carabinieri Corps, including those arising from the absorption of the former State Forestry Corps for the performance of its institutional tasks of a specifically military nature. TheExternal Functions, pertain to the needs related to activities, but which do not specifically fall within its institutional tasks. Finally, the fourth function relates to the Provisional Pensions of Auxiliary Personnel, which are related to the economic benefits paid to military personnel in auxiliary status and to other needs not related to activity-related economic benefits.
Referring to the DPP 2024-2026, in 2024 the total expenditure amounted to 29,184.2 million Euros, broken down as follows: defence function (20,848.6 million Euros), territorial security function (7,751.0 million Euros), external functions (165.1 million Euros) and provisional pensions of auxiliary personnel (419.5 million Euros). In 2024, as a percentage of total expenditure, the defence function accounts for 71.4%, the territorial security function is 26.6%, external functions less than 1% and, finally, provisional pensions come to 1.4%.
