The first weekend of the post-holiday exodus is underway. And diesel prices on the motorway have risen to 2.200 euros per litre
Over 24 million car journeys are expected between now and Sunday 23 August. Many Italians are returning home for work. But there are also those who are setting off.
The first weekend following the end of the summer holidays is upon us: many Italians are returning home to resume work. However, there are still some last-minute departures. According to estimates from Anas’ Road Mobility Observatory, from Friday until Sunday 23 August, there will be over 24 million vehicle journeys on the roads and motorways managed by the FS Group company.
Fuel prices continue to rise
The bad news is that the rise in price of fuel continues to rise, during the first weekend of the post-Ferragosto holiday exodus and ahead of the 25 August deadline for the extension of the excise duty cut on diesel.
Today, 22 August, the average price of self-service fuel across the national road network stands at 2.008 euros per litre for petrol (up from 2.005 yesterday), whilst on motorways it has risen to 2.085 euros (2.080 yesterday). Self-service diesel on ordinary roads is currently selling at 2.128 euros per litre (2.122 yesterday) and on motorways at 2.200 euros (2.186 yesterday). These figures have been released by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy.
The post-holiday rush could cost up to 270 euros per family
Codacons is the organisation that keeps tabs on Italians’ spending. On longer journeys, between fuel, tolls and stops at service stations, a family can end up spending around 270 euros.
Red alert for departures
Viabilità Italia has announced a ‘red alert’ for this morning, Saturday 22 August, and Sunday afternoon, 23 August: there has been a sharp increase in traffic heading towards major urban centres across Italia from holiday resorts. Please note that the summer ‘red alert’ calendar is available on the Anas website and on the Viabilità Italia. The ban on heavy goods vehicles is in force on Saturday 22 August from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm and on Sunday 23 August from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm.
