The future banknotes of the eurozone

The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank of the European Union member states – 20 out of 27 – that have adopted the euro.

On 23 July 2026, the ECB will unveil the winning designs for the future euro banknotes, based on two possible themes: ‘European culture: shared cultural spaces’ and ‘Rivers and birds: resilience through diversity’

European culture’ celebrates the shared cultural spaces that have shaped European identity over the centuries. The motifs in this theme depict various cultural activities and spaces, as well as iconic European figures who have contributed to the development of Europe’s cultural heritage. Their lives span six centuries, during which they lived, travelled and worked across our continent, and their achievements have resonated around the world.

Rivers and Birds” highlights the resilience and diversity of Europe’s natural ecosystems by showcasing the different stages of rivers and the various species of birds, emphasising the importance of nature and environmental protection. The European institutions featured on the banknotes remind us of the fundamental values of the European project, which also encompasses environmental protection.
