The gip of Milan Roberto Crepaldi has validated the judicial control of Deliveroo Italy, the Italian branch of the American colossus that ended up in the investigation of the Public Prosecutor Paolo Storari and the Carabinieri of the Labour Inspectorate Unit for illegal labour of 20 thousand riders, of which three thousand in the province of Milan. A case that recalls that of Foodinho-Glovo in recent weeks.
For the prosecution, confirmed by the judge after the public prosecutor's emergency order in recent days, the delivery food company would have paid workers below the poverty line: 3, 4, 5 euro per delivery for figures of around one thousand euro per month. The judicial administrator will have to work to regularise the riders' positions. The company and its sole administrator are under investigation. For the gip, as stated in the decree, it emerges in fact that 'the majority of riders, despite claiming to work a significantly higher number of hours than the normal weekly schedule, receive a net annual income' that is lower than that provided for by the national labour contract. And therefore 'it cannot be denied' that these are wages 'not in line with the parameters' of the contract, let alone the 'constitutional minimum wage'.
Deliveroo issued a note stating: 'We believe that our operations are fully compliant with Italian law and that we have always acted responsibly, both in accordance with the law and in keeping with our duty to the thousands of riders who have chosen our platform. We will continue to cooperate fully in the continuation of the investigation'.
