It was a magical Roland Garros for the Italian colours: Italy was present in all four semifinals. After Sinner and Paolini in the singles, the pairs Paolini-Errani in the women's doubles and Bolelli-Vavassori in the men's doubles joined them.
Let's start with the absolute star of the day. Jasmine Paolini won by surprise against Elena Rybakina (already champion at Wimbledon) and conquered the first semi-final of her career in a Slam. With grit, determination and a contagious smile, the Tuscan (seeded number 12) defeated the 24-year-old Kazakh, number 4 in the world, in the third: 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 the score, after two hours and three minutes. A result that allows the 28-year-old coached by Renzo Furlan to break into the top ten. And that was not all: shortly afterwards Jasmine took to the court with Sara Errani to secure a place in the semifinals in the doubles as well. The two Italians, fresh from their triumph at the Internazionali di Roma, defeated Snaider and Navarro, with a double 6-3. Now awaiting them are Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk and Romania's Elena Ruse.
"To be in the semifinals is an incredible feeling, I won a very tough match. I was too excited in the second set. I told myself 'it's OK, she's a great champion, it can happen to lose a set, fight and try to hit every ball'. It worked and here I am". These were Jasmine Paolini's words in the on-court interview. "For the first time I played on the Chatrier, it is a privilege. I am happy to have won the first match on one of the most beautiful courts in the world," added the player who will now face Mirra Andreeva. The 17-year-old Russian, world number 38, eliminated veteran and second in the Wta ranking Aryna Sabalenka.
Bolelli and Vavassori ahead
Great results also came in the men's doubles: Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori confirmed their growing chemistry by reaching the semifinals. The Italian pair defeated the number 3 seed on the draw, the American Rajeev Ram and the Briton Joe Salisbury, in a comeback 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. This is the second Slam semi-final in two majors played this year after the Australian Open final. They will now meet again the Bopanna-Ebden pair, beaten a few weeks ago at the Foro Italico.
