Consider a creator – that is, a professional who makes a living by filming themselves in the world. The problem for anyone making videos on their own is having to be both in front of and behind the camera at the same time. You set up the shot, get into position, and then realise – often only during editing – that you’ve cut off your own head.
The Insta360 Luna Ultra rises to the challenge with two Leica lenses, mechanical stabilisation and a detachable display. Our review (and the specialist press) agree on one point: it is a versatile camera that really comes into its own when it comes to tasks it can perform without a second operator. The price is a factor to bear in mind: €729 for the Standard package and €929 for the Creator package. The latter includes a Mic Pro wireless microphone, an extra battery, a wide-angle lens and a carrying pouch. The €200 difference therefore buys you equipment that makes a real difference to your work on location.
What did we like?
The most impressive feature is the two-inch OLED touchscreen . Once detached, it becomes a small remote monitor with physical controls and a built-in microphone, with a claimed transmission range of up to twenty metres. The camera can remain on the tripod whilst the presenter adjusts the framing from their own position. When filming alone, this reduces the need to use a smartphone as both a monitor and a remote control. It’s a real advantage when you’re already using your phone to refer to notes or showcase a product.
The Deep Track 5.0 system adds automatic tracking. It helps keep the subject in the frame as it moves, taking one less task off your hands. Do make sure to update the firmware, though.
The dual-lens setup is another reason to consider the Luna Ultra. The 20-millimetre-equivalent f/1.8 wide-angle lens uses a one-inch sensor; the 60-millimetre f/2 telephoto lens uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor. You can switch between a street scene and a face, a workshop and a close-up of a craft.
