"On Wednesday 7 May the main draw begins. But the top seeds like Sinner, Berrettini and Musetti, play one round ahead. So they will take the court on Friday and Saturday of next week. We are ready, everything is ready, everything is new. The final has been sold out for two months but everything else is still there because the spaces are much bigger. Sinner will return to the court after his three-month disqualification.

We realised with Sport and Health this beautiful new stadium inside the Stadio dei Marmi dedicated to Menne. So everything will be new. Everything more beautiful, everything bigger.

We hope to win, we haven't done it in men's or women's singles for about 50 years. This could be the good year, but we must not have too much pressure,' Binaghi continued.

'What do I expect in the world of Italian tennis for the next few years? I expect not to be overwhelmed. The only thing we miss is winning the Internazionali d'Italia, we have been missing it for 50 years. Italian athletes send out extraordinary messages, they are simple guys with great values, great principles, and for us they are a great source of pride more for what they say off the court and how they comment on their performances than for what is nevertheless extraordinary, which are the results they achieve on the court,' he concluded.

The draw for the main draw is scheduled from 3 to 5 May, there will be pre-qualifying from 29 April to 3 May, training sessions open to the public on 4 and 5 May and official qualifying on 6 and 7 May.

The main draw will start on 7 May, concluding with the women's final on 17 May and the men's final on 18 May.

Twelve Italians are competing: high expectations for Jannik Sinner, but also for Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Berrettini, Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Arnaldi, Luciano Darderi and Mattia Bellucci. In addition, four wild cards with Federico Cinà, Fabio Fognini, Luca Nardi and Francesco Passaro.

Seven tennis players were in the field. In addition to Jasmine Paolini and Lucia Bronzetti, wild cards went to Sara Errani, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Nucia Brancaccio, Giorgia Pedone and Lucrezia Stefanini.

Panatta last winner in 1976

In the men's draw, the last Italian to have won the Internazionali d'Italia tennis tournament in Rome - as well as the only one in the Open Era - was Adriano Panatta in 1976: in the final, he beat Argentina's Guillermo Vilas (2-6, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6) in four sets.

Since the women's tournament has been part of the Wta circuit, however, no Italian has ever managed to win it. The last winner, for Italy, was Raffaella Reggi in 1985 (6-4, 6-4 over US Vicki Nelson-Dunbar).
