The satellite market in the Mediterranean is already worth 2 billion
Precision farming, maritime and border surveillance are driving the space observation data sector. This growing trend is set to reach 5 billion by 2032. Platforms are becoming increasingly integrated. Partnerships and investment in the Gulf are on the rise

The satellite IoT sector and dual-use maritime surveillance services are driving this growth. Data provided by the NextMed Observatory also highlights a further aspect relating to the cyber domain. The Mediterranean remains the most critical operational theatre for European space cybersecurity, where the convergence of hybrid threats, illicit trafficking, climate-related stress and infrastructural vulnerabilities generates a unique demand for integrated cyber-space-Digital Twin solutions, positioning European industry – and Italian industry in particular – to capitalise on a technological and commercial race that is expected to last at least two decades. The EU market for space cybersecurity is currently worth around 1.8 billion and is forecast to far exceed 5 billion euros in aggregate figures by 2032.
The fields
The main driver behind the need for satellite and Earth observation data is, first and foremost, precision farming. There are no disaggregated figures for the Mediterranean, but the latest forecast – for January 2026 – indicates a turnover of 5.5 billion for the European market, rising to almost 7 billion when considering the global market, which is expected to be worth over 11 billion by 2030. Sentinel-2 data (10-metre resolution, revisited every 5 days) form the backbone of precision agriculture in our region, enabling the calculation of vegetation indices, prescription maps for variable-rate fertilisation and irrigation, monitoring of water stress and, finally, crop yield estimates. The Copernicus programme directly supports the sector by tracking soil moisture, crop conditions and changes in land use. Suffice it to say that in the Mare Nostrum basin, water stress affects 60 per cent of agricultural land and desertification in the south is advancing at a rate of 1,000 square kilometres per year. It is easy to see why the integration of satellite data, field-based IoT and predictive AI has become strategic for climate adaptation.
The sea
Another growing area is maritime surveillance, often in the military sphere but also for dual-use purposes. The European agency Frontex systematically uses data from the Copernicus programme to monitor the EU’s external borders, integrating it into the Eurosur system (European Border Surveillance System). A study published by Frontex in December 2025, ‘Earth Observation for Border Management’, mapped out the gaps and opportunities in satellite observation for land and maritime surveillance, identifying ultra-high-resolution SAR and artificial intelligence for the automatic detection of ships and vehicles as the priority technologies in which to invest. The Eurosur Fusion Services (EFS) system, also coordinated by Frontex, fuses satellite imagery, radar data, AIS signals, intelligence information and imagery from MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) drones to provide real-time information to individual national authorities. So-called ‘maritime domain awareness’ in the Mediterranean makes use of integrated platforms such as Disha (an initiative of the World Food Programme and UN Global Pulse), SeaVision (developed by the US Department of Transportation) and the CRIMARIO (Critical Maritime Routes) system, launched by the EU in 2015 and now extended to the Indo-Pacific as well. Furthermore, the Planet MDA solution combines high-frequency satellite coverage with AI to detect ‘dark’ vessels (those operating with their transponders switched off for illicit activities), proving particularly effective in the eastern and central Mediterranean. All this points to a web of connections and levels of interoperability that appear set to expand both technologically and geographically. Over the last five years, the Middle East has also stepped up its efforts. The Gulf States are building sovereign space capabilities with a particular focus on dual-use Earth observation. In 2025, the United Arab Emirates launched the Thuraya-4 satellites for communications, MBZ-SAT for ultra-high-resolution observation, Etihad-SAT and Arab Satellite 813, the first Arab hyperspectral satellite. Space42, an Abu Dhabi-based company, has expanded its constellation to five SAR satellites with a resolution of 25 centimetres, integrating artificial intelligence-based analysis for intelligence, infrastructure monitoring and maritime security applications. In August 2025, Saudi Arabia launched the first national Earth Observation Marketplace (managed by the Neo Space group), providing simplified access to high-resolution data for government and private sector organisations.
The Middle East
Synergies between Europe and the Gulf region are intensifying significantly. Leonardo, through Thales Alenia Space, has supplied the Falcon Eye 1 and 2 satellites to the UAE, with sub-metre optical resolution, and Thales Alenia Space itself is involved in Saudi and Emirati programmes. Sovereign wealth funds are investing in space start-ups, with funding rounds totalling 450 million. Saudi Arabia, through the Saudi Space Commission and the Public Investment Fund, has launched the Neom Space Group, a space innovation ecosystem with an initial investment of 2.5 billion dollars that has already attracted over 20 EU companies. The data and figures point to two trajectories. One is a vertical trajectory of technological integration, and the other is a geopolitical one, in which Europe is increasingly inclined to engage with the Gulf.
